Quick Style Update

Just a quick update on styles. I wasn’t crazy about the link colours in the theme/template, so I started mucking around with the hover/link/visited/active link colours in the style sheet. Thing is, I wasn’t sure where to look for these or how to modify them, so a quick visit to the forums on WordPress.org and it was all sorted in minutes. I’m mighty impressed with the speed and quality of responses I see at that support forum.
Once I knew where to look for the styles (amazingly enough we’re talking about a file called style.css here!) and what the syntax was, a quick google for the relevant colour names and I was ready to roll. Style changed, file uploaded to site and new links engaged all in minutes. It really is that easy!.
The themes

After posting the inital entry I realised that I ‘d better explain all the howling at moon stuff and wolf / coyote themes and images. My online experiences of the net for the last 15 or so years have been mostly centered around gaming; it’s fair to say I’m an avid gamer and always will be. With that in mind, I’ve had an online nick for as long as I can remember – “Coyote”.
I’ve also been known to howl at the moon on occasion (figuratively speaking), whether alcohol induced or not, and so it seemed appropriate to name this new blog area ‘Howl at the moon’, and given my choice of online avatar, it seems logical to go with the wolves and coyote images and logos.
The choice of domain name Avalon5.com came about purely by accident. I’d been searching for logical, sensible domain names but of course they had all been taken. Every combination I could think of… gone. So I’ve always liked mythology, and when I went looking for avalon.com it had also been taken, however two things occurred to me. First – I’m a huge Babylon5 fan and second, this was actually my fifth time to try to do anything on the web in respect of sites or pages, and so the next logical conclusion became Avalon5.com.
Just thought I’d clarify that for anyone who was wondering:).
And so it begins…

Well – it seems this blogging business is not as hard as I thought it would be. I’ve managed to install and configure WordPress this morning without too much hassle, and I even got this fancy theme on the web and managed to edit it to suit my needs. Not everything is in place yet of course, but as a starting point I’m quite happy with it. The purpose of this entry is to a) mark the occasion and b) see what the sodding thing looks like when I post text to it.
Considering I just launched Avalon5.com yesterday evening, I’m sort of amazed at how quickly I managed to get a blog script / solution integrated into the site. I’ve no doubt that I’ll spend a few hours over the coming evenings customising and playing with this area of the site until it’s right, but for now it was pretty painless with the following exceptions:-
- Permissions problem with templates.php – still need to track that one down.
- Enable Referrers – I had to update my browser and firewall settings to allow this through before the blog would allow me to update the themes section
- Themes – Pretty straight forward to find, upload but the customisation might take me a bit of sweat!
