High Hopes for Flying Daggers

March 24, 2005 (No Responses)

Flying DaggersI have very high expectations for this film and it’s about to drop into my postbox any day now. When I watched Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon I fell in love immediately. I was blown away by the magical quality of the movie. The music was so beautiful it’s just hard to describe; the acting was subtle, the story was terriffic and as for the action, it was a wonderful blend of the impossible and the sexy, all mixed into a fantastic movie. Ang Lee did a superb job directing this movie. There really is only one way to view it, and that is in the original format, with English subtitles.

Then Yimou Zhang brought us Hero, which lacked the emotional core of the previous movie, but added something special in the areas of cinematography and colour. This is an incredible film to watch, again in original format with English subtitles. The use of colour in this film is unprecedented and the sweeping landscapes and seriously clever coreographed fight scenes are just jaw dropping. Still - it didn’t quite reach the standard of it’s predecessor, although both are truly collectible films in their own right.

And then there was House of Flying Daggers, the second effort from a href=”http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0955443/” target=”_blank”>Yimou Zhang. Now everything I’ve read and heard about this movie just whets my appetite, I believe it builds on the last one but surpasses Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - which is a lofty goal. This movie was due to be released in Ireland back in December 2004, but for some reason it was delayed. Now it’s just hit the cinemas here, but I’d already ordered it on DVD so it’s due to drop into my post box any minute now.

I cannot recommend Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon highly enough, it truly is a cinematic experience, and I would also suggest viewing Hero if only to give you a point of reference for where Yimou Zhang has come from, because when House of Flying Daggers hits your local cinemas or DVD stores - you really should make it your business to get a copy and give it some time.
