Superman Returns (Film Review)

July 18, 2006 (No Responses)

Superman ReturnsNORMALLY I GO INTO a lot of relevant detail in a film review, just check out my Films cateogry for examples, but in this case I will make an exception. I’m too tired and too busy to get into it so I’ll just summarise by saying that I had one question going into this film. Is it worthy?

The answer is a resounding yes. It’s worthy on so many levels that I’m completely satisfied with the film. It’s obvious to me that Bryan Singer is a fan, a big fan of the character.

It’s a worthy homage to the original. There are plenty of tasteful references and inclusions of the original story, characters and premise.

It’s a worthy plot in it’s own right and in keeping with the kind of events and storylines common to the mythology of Superman.

It’s a worthy piece of acting from the newcomer in the role of Superman. He obviously studied the previous films and nailed the Clark Kent character. He also brings some new things to the Superman character as well.

I’ve heard some folks say that Kevin Spacey’s Lex Luthor was a bit two dimensional… but I disagree. He played it cold, calculating and perfectly megalomaniacal – a joy to watch. If there was any weak link in the film it’s the Kate Bosworth ‘Lois lane’ character – she just doesn’t do it justice.

Overall though, fantastic editing, superb sound and visuals, terriffic sets and a very satisfying turn of events rounded off a great summer flick for me. Welcome back Superman – here’s to a long franchise of mindless and harmless entertainment in the summer months!
