Global Anti-War Protest Planned For March

February 23, 2006 (2 Responses)

Democracy BBC NEWS REPORTS THAT AN ANTI-WAR MARCH AND RALLY is to be held in London as part of protests across the world to demand that US and UK troops pull out of Iraq. The Stop The War Coalition say they hope “several tens of thousands” of people will demonstrate on 18 March. The event marks the third anniversary of the start of the Iraq conflict. Similar demonstrations are due to be held in cities in Iraq, as well as in America, Japan, Mexico and other parts of Europe.

The people of Basra and Baghdad will be joining next month’s global protest against the US and British occupation of Iraq. Demonstrations planned for Baghdad and Basra on Friday 17 March are backed by the Al-Sadr Movement, the Iraqi Federation of Oil Unions and the Iraqi National Foundation Conference.

It is expected that from London to Jakarta, Baghdad to Madrid, Florida to Santiago millions will take to the streets around 18 March to demonstrate against the occupation of Iraq, and threats of war on Iran. It looks like March is going to be a busy month for those folks interested in having their voices heard.

Predatory SocietyStill – the best way to sum up how I feel about this is actually a quote which goes something like this… “A society that sees only its own virtue is more than blind. It is predatory”. This view I think captures what I believe is happening to the USA in a post-cold war world where it doesn’t quite know how to fit in anymore. Is it the worlds policeman? Is it the defender of the free world? Or has it simply lost its way, and become the worlds worst hegemony, preying on former friends and newly created enemies as a way to define its existence and place? Time will tell I guess.

Where’s the “predatory” comment from? That’s fantastic, and it describes the way things are going in the US all too well.

Zach – I can’t quite remember where I came across this quote, but like you I was struck by it and had to keep it.

Got something to say?
