Get Rid Of Your Google Desktop Now!…

February 10, 2006 (16 Responses)

Google Desktop…BEFORE THE FEDS GET THEIR HANDS ON YOUR DATA! This is no joke folks, honestly. I strongly urge you to delete your installation of Google Desktop if you have one. I had written previously about what a wonderful and useful tool this little gem is, however that was before the recent attempts by the US Department of Justice to get their hands on Google’s search information.

Google’s new Desktop Search could prove to be the biggest government invasion of privacy of all time. The new tool lets you store your desktop data on Google servers. So when the feds come with a subpoena (or without one, as they frequently do), they’ll be able to search through your PC’s files. This is not a scenario I find acceptable so I’m deleting my installation today.

Just thought I’d warn you folks in case you didn’t know what you were letting yourselves in for.

I got rid of mine not long after it came out because of this little gem of a security issue. I understand hackers have already been doing exactly what you say.

Yep, I’m with you. Mine is gone too. So is the Google toolbar for Mozilla and Firefox.

If nothing else, why would I want to allow evil Google to monitor my web activity and sell information about me
    to somebody else?

In addition, my Yahoo desktop stuff is also erased.
No Yahoo or Google instant messenger either.
    It’s all trashed.

    Good riddance to bad rubbish.

I suggest you use the Add/Remove programs feature of Windows, as well as installing some or all of the following programs to assist with malware/spyware:-
    Adaware (http://www.lavasoft.de)
    Spybot (www.spybot.com)

Just go into your CONTROL PANEL and then select ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS and then pick the google software in question and select it to be removed/uninstalled. Couldn’t be easier!

I really am stuck in getting rid of the Google Desktop .. I have tried uninstalling both ways, from Windows Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and also by using the Uninstall Google Desktop from within the program itself. Neither uninstall method gives me back the standard Search files and folders from Windows….
I even tried going through the registry and deleting the items that mentioned the desktop search but that didn’t work either…. GGGrrrrrrr
I would appreciate all advice on how to rid my pc of this over rated accessory….LOL…

Thanks for all help in advance

    Cheers
    Opal

I’m not sure what else to tell you Opal – I did a bog standard uninstall of the app and everything was fine. You could always try ‘repairing’ your Windows O/S installation using the original disk. That at least would eliminate any ‘replaced’ programs on your disk – as part of the core O/S.

fuck google, google desktop has completely ruined my computer, MY COMPUTER WILL NO LONGER SHUT DOWN TO THE FACT THAT GOOGLE DESKTOP CONSTANTLY IS INDEXING MY INFORMATION. I am seriously considering filing a law suit. although I do not have any really sensitive information on my computer, I can not believe that they index your information and DO NOT TELL THE USE. I found out the hard way, by trying to use google desktop while it was indexing.

I am completely taken back, to make matters worse I can not delete the application it is stuck in the terminal as a root file and is proving to be impossible to get rid of…
