Mothery Love – Extremes

November 20, 2005 (No Responses)

Fire & Web CamDO YOU LOVE your mother? Well – it seems that some folks have different definitions for this characteristic. I came across a report on Reuters recently where a Chinese peasant woman who had suffered a brain haemorrhage was left at the undertakers alive for cremation because her family could no longer afford hospital treatment. It seems the only reason she wasn’t turned into a crispy critter was because the undertaker noticed the tears in her eyes and then stopped the proceedings. Health care is in a bad way in China and sometimes families resort to extreme measures to resolve the financial difficulties in supporting sick relatives. Sad but true – until something is done about it.

On the other end of the scale CNN has news from over in Norway and the Phillipenes where sons watching their Mothers living room (back in California) via a webcam were able to see that she had collapsed. They alerted the relevent authorities and then watched the whole proceeding on camera as the paramedics worked to revive her.

I don’t think I could have picked two more extreme views of the concept of motherly love if I’d tried. Tis a mad world we sometimes inhabit here folks.
