Latex + Handcuffs + Donkey + Hotel Room = Very Strange Irish Court Case

Donkey Love In IrelandTHIS WILL PROBABLY SOUND like the start of a very dodgy joke, but honestly, it’s not. This actually happened recently in the west of Ireland. A man who was found dressed in latex and handcuffs brought a donkey to his room in a Galway city centre hotel, because he was advised “to get out and meet people” a local court in Galway, Ireland heard last week.

The defendant, with an address in south Galway, was charged with cruelty to animals, lewd and obscene behaviour, and with being a danger to himself when he appeared before the court. He was also charged with damage to a mini-bar in the room, but this charge was later dropped when the defendant said that “it was the donkey who caused that damage“.

This story first appeared in GalwayFirst and was then picked up by The Register and pretty soon it grew wings and started spreading around the Interweb. Want to know what name the looper used to check in to the hotel with?

Mr. Shrek :)

Seriously folks – as insane as this sounds, there’s actually more, and it just gets weirder…

The hotel receptionist claims that the defendant told her that the donkey was a “breed of super rabbit” which he was bringing to a pet fair in the city. The court was told that the donkey went berserk in the middle of the night and ran amok in the hotel corridor, forcing hotel staff to call the cops in. I can see a HBO special on this already!

The best is yet to come though; the defendant was found in the room wearing a latex suit and handcuffs, the key to which the donkey is believed to have swallowed. He was fined €2,000 for bringing the donkey to the room under the Unlawful Accommodation of Donkeys Act 1837. Other charges were dropped due to lack of evidence.

I guess he should count himself lucky he only got fined €2000; probably because the judge had no point of reference for such offences, although there are rumours of this being quite common ‘down the west of Ireland’ ;)

ah that was a fake news story. it never happened..my gow .. there isnt even an Unlawful Accommodation of Donkeys Act 1837

The Irish Free State was established in 1922. In 1837, Ireland was part of the United Kingdom. In 1922, all laws of the UK that did not conflict with the new Irish constitution were continued. So an 1837 act regarding donkeys would have been passed in the UK parliament, it was not.

I thought as much… still, I like the “idea” of the story… but maybe that’s just because I’ve seen some pretty strange things down the ‘west’ in my time :)
