“White People Wear Sagging Pants Too” – Louisana Mayor Declares War On Saggy Trousers!

ON AN OTHERWISE slow news day I can always depend on the good ol’ US of A to come up with some whacky and wonderful news item which manages to push the boundaries of incredulity, at least from this side of the pond anyway.
I’ve done a quick sanity check to be on the safe side. It’s not April 1st, there are no pigs flying by my window and George Bush is still in control of the most powerful and powerfully confused nation on the planet… so this must be a real story then.
The good Mayor Carol Broussard of Delcambre town council in Louisana has declared war on saggy trousers. Apparently the hipsters have been wearing their jeans a little low down the waist, exposing some nifty underwear in the process, and all this has just been a little too much for the good folks of Delcambre. Decency is under threat and somethig had to be done, so in stepped the Mayor with some new legislation outlawing the wearing of said saggy trousers. It’s against the public interest don’t you know. Decency must be protected.
Seriously!
Anyone who “exposes their private parts” by wearing such offensive clothing will end up getting a $500 fine. Some residents of this incredibly out-of-whack town are complaining that this new law will target blacks, but the good Mayor has a response for that: “White people wear sagging pants too” apparently. Somehow the vision of a spotty white guy trying too hard to look cool just doesn’t cut it.
I mean – just look at that artists impression over there on the left – ’nuff said. 
Still, not content with bringing in such a draconian law the good Mayor has also made his views clear on the offenders people who would wear such offensive clothing. When asked what he expects such folks to do he replied “They’re better off taking the pants off and just wearing a dress“. I guess we know where the Mayor stands on this issue then.
Hmm… not sure our spotty white git above would look that much better in a little dress. I’m guessing there won’t be many gay pride marches or cross dressing festivals in this town in the near future. One does also have to wonder what is next for the town of Delcambre. Recommendations for trouser lengths? A law enforcing colour combinations? Legislation against the sale of tight fitting t-shirts?
With radical thinking like this Delcambre could soon become a favoured vacation destination for Bush & Co. All they need to do now is make sure their women don’t wear anything inappropriate, walk three feet behind their men and only speak when they are spoken to… oh wait, that’s Texas isn’t it?
I think it is ridiculous that you can get a $500 fine or up to 6 months in jail for sagging your pants. I think that it is ridiculous that you can get any kind of punishment for wearing your clothes how you want to wear them. In my opinion, wearing your clothes how you want is just another form of freedom of speech. In my opinion, people are just using this law to get people to look the way they want to look. If the way someone is wearing their clothes is bothering you, you have the right to say something, but if they do not want to follow what you told them to do, then they have the right to do so. For example, what if someone made a law saying that people who were involved in the Sikhism religion were asked to wear different clothing because what they were wearing was bothering someone. Why are we even spending all of this money on this issue, when there are homeless people who don’t have clothes to wear, when there are victims from Hurricane Katrina who sufferred tremendously, and brave soldiers in Iraq who are fighting to keep America “free”. If this is still a “free” country, let’s try to keep it that way.
